About Not Quite Coy
It all began many years ago at brunch, where all important art begins. Lindsay Casella and Stephanie Greenwald realized that something was missing from contemporary theatre, something that was necessary, and something they knew it was their job to create. A play about the plight of the single girl. It was perplexing that such a play did not already exist, therefore the mission was clear and seemingly simple; Lindsay and Stephanie would write, act and produce this play.
Lindsay and Stephanie always dreamed of being great actresses in the theatre. From a young age with wide eyes and ambitious spirits they knew of all places in this world, they belonged on the stage. They would work for years independently of each other acting in theatres and at school, making up silly characters with their friends and stealing focus in class pictures. Until one day their paths crossed at the brink of adulthood, college. It was there that they found they had a similar passion. No, not the theatre, wanting boyfriends! They bonded over talking about their crushes and hanging out together on Friday…and Saturday nights. They realized the genius of having another girl with whom to commiserate singlehood.
Then came graduation, adulthood, day jobs, health insurance, the El and wondering what in God’s name they were going to do with their lives. In a moment of clarity, while eating cinnamon rolls, they decided it was time to conjoin their two passions: the theatre and wanting boyfriends. After a speedy FIVE years of writing and pouring their souls onto Word documents, they gave birth to a shiny new baby girl (95 pages long!) and named her Next Stop Spinsterland. A play about two everygirls forced to find love in an unknown land.
Indeed, this project took them longer than they had ever anticipated. As they’ve learned…some things in life can’t be rushed. Like writing plays, finding love and good hair color.
This play was written for all the singles out there. The ones who are picky, the ones who won’t settle and most importantly the ones who have hope that around every corner there is a possibility of love.
